Coolant does more than prevent freezing. The correct coolant mixture raises the boiling point, helps prevent corrosion, lubricates the water pump, and protects mixed metals throughout the cooling system. Those protections weaken over time, especially when coolant has been neglected, diluted improperly, or mixed with an incompatible formula.

A cooling-system flush additive is a chemical cleaner added to the old coolant or to water during a service procedure, depending on the product instructions. It is formulated to suspend loose rust, scale, oily residue, and certain deposits so they can be drained from the system. Flush additives differ in concentration, run time, and whether they are intended for gasoline engines, diesel engines, or broad cooling-system use. The vehicle manufacturer specifies the coolant chemistry that belongs in the system after cleaning. That specification matters more than matching coolant by color.

A typical process follows a practical sequence. First, start with a completely cool engine. Never remove a radiator cap or pressurized reservoir cap from a hot system. Add the cleaner according to its directions, then run the engine for the stated time with the heater set to hot when appropriate. This helps circulate the cleaner through the heater core as well as the engine and radiator.

Next, allow the engine to cool fully and drain the system responsibly. Used coolant is toxic and attractive to animals because of its sweet taste, so capture it in a suitable container and take it to an approved recycling or disposal location. Flush with distilled or demineralized water if the product instructions and vehicle procedure call for it. Tap water can leave mineral deposits behind, particularly in areas with hard water.

After draining, refill with the exact coolant type and concentration required for the vehicle. Many vehicles use a 50/50 coolant and distilled-water mixture, but some applications require a different concentration or a premixed product. Bleed air from the system using the manufacturer-recommended process. Trapped air can create hot spots, reduce heater output, and make a healthy cooling system appear to have a problem.
